Parents have been urged to support and encourage children who show interest in developing their talents, with education leaders saying creative skills can provide young people with opportunities to earn a living after completing school.
The call was made by Lawrence Muwonge, the Chairperson of the Wakiso Secondary Schools Headteachers Association (WAKISHA) Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) organizing committee, during the WAKISHA MDD competitions held at the association’s headquarters.
The competition brought together secondary schools from Wakiso and Kampala districts, where students showcased their abilities in singing, drama, instrumental music, dance, poetry, and other creative performances.
Muwonge, who is also the Headteacher of Buddo Secondary School, said talent development is an important part of preparing learners for life beyond academics.
“These competitions help students discover and develop their talents, which can later help them create opportunities and sustain themselves after completing their studies,” Muwonge said.
He explained that although many schools are interested in participating in MDD activities, some are limited by challenges such as lack of equipment and shortage of professional trainers.
“We know that many schools want to join these competitions, but some face challenges because they do not have the necessary equipment and skilled trainers. We are working to ensure more schools are encouraged to participate,” he added.
Muwonge appealed to parents to give children the freedom and support they need to pursue their talents alongside their academic studies.
“Parents should understand that talent is also important. Supporting children in these activities can increase their chances of having a successful future,” he said.
WAKISHA Secretary Deo Lwanyi called on more schools to join the association so they can strengthen the promotion of Music, Dance and Drama among learners.
The WAKISHA Chairperson Immaculate Nasozi encouraged students to take their talents seriously, saying creative skills can now provide employment opportunities.
“Students should continue developing their talents because, in today’s world, talent can become a source of livelihood and success,” Nasozi said.
A total of 13 schools participated in this year’s competitions, with Buddo Secondary School emerging as the overall winner and receiving the championship trophy and Certificates were given out to all schools that participated.
